Maceió Drives Transformation of the Mercado da Produção with Support from FONPLATA

Maceió is taking a major step toward more inclusive urban development with the renovation of the Mercado da Produção, an iconic market that is central to daily life in the city. More than just a place to buy and sell, the market is a gathering place where local producers, market vendors, families, and tradition come together.

Supported by FONPLATA through the Desenvolve Maceió program, the Municipal Production Market project goes beyond physical upgrades. It aims to modernize infrastructure and management while improving conditions for workers, vendors, and consumers. The project will enhance safety, accessibility, sustainability, and market operations at one of the  main economic hubs of the metropolitan area.

The initiative reflects a comprehensive vision of urban development that places the people who bring the market to life at its center. Expected benefits include streamlined supply chains, better working conditions for merchants and vendors, and a stronger local economy, supporting small businesses, the food sector, and tourism.

The project also creates an opportunity to revitalize urban areas that have suffered physical deterioration, informality, and maintenance and management challenges. It recognizes that success depends not only on architectural design, but also on an effective, participatory governance model.

To that end, the new market pairs infrastructure improvements with an innovative management approach that includes dialogue with vendors, clear operating rules, regular maintenance, and active participation from stakeholders. The program incorporates a social perspective with an emphasis on inclusion and gender-sensitive measures.

From an environmental standpoint, the project prioritizes sustainable solutions, such as rainwater reuse, natural ventilation and lighting, solar energy, and measures to reduce flood risks.

The challenge is not only to build better infrastructure, but also to manage it better. Infrastructure and governance must advance together.

Maceió’s experience shows that urban development is also shaped by everyday life: in the spaces where the city works, shops, sells, meets, and finds its identity.
