FONPLATA signs loan agreement for drinking water and sanitation works in the Department of Maldonado, Uruguay
The signing of the loan agreement for the Drinking Water and Sanitation Program in the department of Maldonado, funded by FONPLATA, took place on Tuesday, October 8, in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Boosted by tourism, the construction sector, and the growth of services, the department of Maldonado, located in the southeast of the country, became the third most populated in the last decades.
The program aims to help improve the quality of life of this department’s population. The works will improve the quality of drinking water services, expand sewer service coverage, and reduce pollution through the treatment and disposal of household effluents, while protecting the environment and complying with environmental laws. The following projects will be financed: San Carlos WWTP with a capacity of 110 L/s; La Alameda wastewater pumping station; about 70 kilometers of secondary sanitary sewerage networks, including more than 6,000 household connections; more than 40 kilometers of primary and secondary drinking water networks; Cerro Pelado pressure reducing station; and four water distribution reservoirs; among other prioritized investments.
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche, received several national and departmental authorities, among others: the Mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía; the Executive President of FONPLATA, Luciana Botafogo; the President of the Corporación Nacional para el Desarrollo (CND – National Corporation for Development), Luis Puig; the Director of the Oficina de Planeamiento y Presupuesto (OPP – Office of Planning and Budget), Fernando Blanco; the Directors for Uruguay, Valerie Stahl and Fernando Luis Scelza; and FONPLATA's Country Coordinator for Uruguay, Carolina Vera Moreira.
