Asuncion, October 10, 2018.FONPLATA Executive Board of Directors gathered in this city, approved today the project “Support to the railway safety program in the Buenos Aires metropolitan region”, which amounts to 50 million dollars.
The purpose of the program is to improve the safety and quality of the passenger railway services in the Buenos Aires metropolitan region. Specifically, it aims at enhancing the service regularity and reducing the accident rates in the intervened sections.
The funding shall timely support urgent and necessary investments on the railway services of the Buenos Aires metropolitan region.
The railway plays a key role in the development of the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, as it structures the city’s main mobility and growth axes.
The passenger railway network of the Buenos Aires metropolitan region is one of the largest in the western hemisphere, covering 815 km with seven lines. Nevertheless, out of a total of 22.7 million daily commutes, only 1.6 are by train.
The program funded by FONPLATA supplements other initiatives and projects that are being developed and creates important synergies among them, such as the recovery of the Belgrano, San Martin, and Roca lines, and the re-electrification of the Sarmiento line.
