FONPLATA and IAI: Strategic Alliance between Finance and Science for Sustainable Development
Among the alliances established during COP30, FONPLATA — Development Bank signed a Cooperation Agreement with IAI — Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research.
This agreement brings together two complementary strengths: FONPLATA's more than 50 years of experience financing regional integration and sustainable infrastructure in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and IAI’s unique role as an intergovernmental institution composed by 19 countries of the Americas, dedicated to science, capacity building, and science-policy dialogue on climate, biodiversity, and global change.
The partnership establishes a shared space where science, public policies, and development financing can work together in a coordinated manner. FONPLATA and IAI commit to:
· Integrating the best available scientific evidence on climate change, extreme events, and ecosystem resilience into the design, execution, and evaluation of projects financed by the Bank.
· Co-designing practical tools, such as drought management guides with climate services and early warning systems, policy briefs for public decision-makers, and joint statements on regional cooperation.
· Supporting initiatives for climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable water management, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, while fostering collaboration among academic institutions, public agencies, and local communities.
· Promoting the use of open data and environmental and socioeconomic indicators to strengthen the interoperability of information systems and sustainable development planning in the region.
· Participating jointly in key regional and international forums—including the COPs of the IAI, UNFCCC, and CBD, as well as the Finance in Common Summit—and mobilizing financial and technical resources through coordinated proposals to international climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development funds.
FONPLATA views this Agreement as a strategic step toward deepening its role as facilitator of resilient, low-carbon, and nature-positive development in each of its member countries. It ensures that every drinking water system, urban or road project, and regional initiative supported by the Bank is grounded in the best available science and local knowledge.
IAI sees this cooperation as a direct channel to translate more than three decades of research, open data, and scientific diplomacy into tangible impacts on the ground: better-prepared cities, more resilient infrastructure, and public policies that reflect the complexity of climate and biodiversity risks in Latin America.
In the months ahead, teams from both organizations will work together on the proposed objectives.
