Route PY09 Opens Boosting Integration and Development in the Paraguayan Chaco
The renovated road corridor between Remanso and Puerto Falcón, in the department of Presidente Hayes, was inaugurated in January 2026 by Paraguayan President Santiago Peña and Minister of Public Works and Communications Claudia Centurión. The project indirectly benefits more than 125,000 people in the surrounding area and strengthens border connectivity with Argentina, consolidating a key passage for trade and regional integration.
Spanning 19.2 km, the project transformed a vital stretch for local and international traffic into a modern, safe road through the rehabilitation and widening of the carriageway, the construction of three reinforced concrete bridges, and the addition of everyday infrastructure: a bike lane, parking bays, pedestrian shelters, and a footbridge at the entrance to the Maká Quenkuket indigenous community.
In addition, ancillary works were carried out to optimize logistics, such as a dedicated truck access road to the Puerto Falcón Customs Office, as well as environmental measures that include the planting of 1,500 trees and the adaptation of culverts to allow wildlife passage.
This project is part of the Paraguay South–West Integration Corridors Road Infrastructure Program, financed by FONPLATA, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), and local funds.
The corridor directly benefits the municipalities of Puerto Falcón, Nanawa, and Nueva Asunción, impacting the daily lives of more than 17,000 people and facilitating the movement of transporters, cross-border workers, and merchants. Its completion represents a strategic gateway for the development of the Lower Chaco, attracting new investments and strengthening territorial integration.
FONPLATA celebrates the progress and completion of works that connect territories and opportunities. The Bank continues to support infrastructure initiatives that improve communities’ quality of life and strengthen the competitiveness of these regions.
