The Development Bank will fund the “Rio Bermejo Basin Development Program – 2nd Stage”, aiming at contributing to the sustainable development of the Rio Bermejo Basin and improving the quality of life of the local population.

The Argentine Ministry of Public Work (MOP) will oversee the execution of the works and the Rio Bermejo Regional Commission (COREBE) will provide technical assistance. The total investment in the program is USD 51 million, of which USD 43.6 million will be financed by FONPLATA, and USD 7.4 million by local contribution.

The program includes major works to mitigate the impact of extreme events and flood risk and aims at improving access to drinking water for vulnerable populations. Thus, it will enhance the quality of life of the inhabitants of this geographic region in the provinces of Jujuy and Salta.

In Jujuy, the works will focus on drainage systems in urban areas and the construction of river defenses to reduce flooding threat in towns such as Tilcara and Purmamarca, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Whereas in Salta, the program will address the limited access to water for human consumption in urban and rural areas.

In this sense, the program fulfills the commitment under FONPLATA's Sustainable Debt Framework at the socio-environmental level, by generating affordable basic infrastructure for water and sanitation. Thus, it will contribute to reach five of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): “No Poverty” (SDG-1), “Gender Equality” (SDG-5), “Clean Water and Sanitation” (SDG-6), “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG-11), and “Climate Action” (SDG-13).
