Strengthening International Partnerships and Cooperation to Protect the Amazon

The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) held a meeting in Brasilia, Brazil, where strategies were coordinated and investment priorities were aligned with a view to the presentation at COP 30. The objective was to maximize the impact of the resources allocated to the protection of the biome and strengthen the capacities of the Amazon countries to deal with environmental and social challenges. FONPLATA was represented by André Sampaio, Project Specialist, who presented the work of the Development Bank in the Brazilian Amazon, and Raphael Lenzi, Senior Specialist in Strategic Partnerships.

The contributors highlighted the need to mobilize financial resources and ensure the participation of key stakeholders, including indigenous peoples and local communities. Additionally, emphasis was placed on the value of bioeconomy, science and innovation, environmental governance, and access to strategic data as critical pillars in the conservation of the Amazon and the sustainable development of the region.

The event was also attended by representatives of ACTO member countries, the embassies of the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, France, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, international cooperation agencies and development banks, such as the IDB, World Bank, CAF, FAO, UNESCO, IICA, GIZ, ABC, and UNODC.

The meeting was closed with a strong call for action and the strengthening of the Amazon as a common good of planetary importance.
