FONPLATA promotes access to water and sanitation in the Brazilian State of Santa Catarina
In a key action to improve essential services in Brazil, FONPLATA approved a USD 55-million funding for CASAN (Companhia Catarinense de Águas e Saneamento: Water and sanitation company of Santa Catarina). This is the Development Bank's first non-sovereign operation in the water and sanitation sector, setting a precedent in the use of innovative financing that does not involve public resources.
The funding will enable CASAN to reach the goal of increasing its sewerage coverage from 32% to 90% by 2033, while maintaining 98% of the access to drinking water. These improvements will directly benefit 1.7 million people, i.e., 63% of its current users in the State. The funding will support essential works, such as the expansion of water networks and sewerage systems, as well as the modernization of treatment plants. Altogether, the works will not only improve access to essential services, but also contribute to strengthening public health, social welfare, and environmental protection.
This operation combines financial innovation with social benefits, and is based on the revenues generated by CASAN, which guarantees the sustainability of the financing and provides new opportunities for other states and countries in the region.
Thanks to this support, Santa Catarina is taking concrete steps towards meeting the national goals of universal water and sanitation. With this action, FONPLATA reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the improvement of the quality of life in its member countries.
