Brazil: New Office and Agreement to Boost Local Development and Gender Equality
On Tuesday, August 27, FONPLATA officially opened a new office in Brasilia, in the presence of the Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet.
The Executive President of the Development Bank, Luciana Botafogo, and the Minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) through which both institutions commit to collaborate and cooperate on shared goals and objectives related to local development and the reduction of gender and inequality gaps.
FONPLATA's operations portfolio in Brazil focus on programs that support municipal governments in their growth and development initiatives. There are currently 21 operations underway and 10 projects in either preparation or signature phase. It is also the country with more projects financed through the “Green Line”, which seeks to promote projects with a strong environmental component.
At the same time, under the “Gender and Youth Line”, there are several programs aimed at the institutional strengthening of municipalities to incorporate a gender perspective, as well as at modernizing reference and social care centers and supporting training and professional insertion programs for minorities.
In this context, the Memorandum will help strengthen and create initiatives focused on reducing gender inequalities, as well as boost small and medium-sized projects that promote the development of local public policies aimed at consolidating harmonious and inclusive development.
At the end of the event, Luciana Botafogo highlighted the growth of the Development Bank: “This inauguration is a turning point. FONPLATA is growing, the Governors approved in Sucre an increase of authorized capital from USD 3 billion to USD 6.500 billion (...). We have already doubled contributed capital, and it will not be redistributed only among founding countries, as we are now open to new members. We want to be the bank of Mercosur, and a bank that works in the niche where other banks are not working.”
The inauguration ceremony was held in Brasilia and was attended by various Brazilian authorities, as well as representatives of international and local organizations.
From this new location, FONPLATA will continue to work with Brazil to implement initiatives that strengthen local communities and ensure a positive lasting impact.
