Reduced congestion and increased capacity in the Port of Montevideo
Under the project “Improvement of the port access on Rambla Portuaria”, FONPLATA will fund works for 50 million dollars.
Asuncion, October 10, 2018. FONPLATA Executive Board of Directors gathered in this city, approved today the project “Improvement of the port access on Rambla Portuaria”, which aims at improving land accessibility of the Port of Montevideo by road and rail.
The works also aim at eliminating congestion problems caused by heavy traffic on the port access road and at expanding the port capacity and functionality.
Passengers and goods transport has increased around the port of Montevideo due to the greater economic activity in the port and the city.
In turn, the load space management has changed as a result, among other factors, of the creation of new assembly centers - such as terminals outside the port and dry ports - and exclusion zones or restrictions to heavy transport.
These factors have led to a significant demand for road infrastructure in the port access area.
The National Port Authority - ANP - has decided to reorganize the internal circulation of the Port of Montevideo and consolidate the entry/exit for heavy-duty vehicles in a single access point, which will help enhance the port’s logistics efficiency and productivity, and expand its yard capacity in keeping with the development of the city.
The works include the construction of a viaduct and and arched bridge in the current port access road, Rambla Portuaria, the paving of the new port area and other works that will improve Montevideo port internal and external traffic.
The general goal of the project is to enhance the competitiveness and efficiency of the Port of Montevideo in order to meet foreign trade expansion needs in no less than 30 years.
