Helping to mitigate the effects of climate change in Criciúma — Brazil

Ph. Prefeitura de Criciúma

The Executive President a.i. of the Development Bank, Luciana Botafogo, and Criciúma’s Mayor, Clésio Salvaro, have signed the agreement that enables the execution of the project “Transport and Urban Mobility in Criciúma/SC – II”, in the Brazilian State of Santa Catarina, which aims at improving the quality of life of the population and the city’s resilience to the effects of climate change by investing in infrastructure to improve urban mobility and make it more sustainable, as well as to reduce the effects of floods on the population.

The Municipality of Criciúma will be in charge of the project, which totals an investment of more than USD 31 million, 80% of which — more than USD 25 million — will be funded with resources from FONPLATA — Development Bank, and 20% by local contribution.

The project “Transport and Urban Mobility in Criciúma/SC – II” will improve connectivity among neighborhoods and with state and national highways, as well as reduce flooding in the city, by increasing the capacity of rainwater canals and pipelines. Thus travel time and mobility restrictions will be reduced, increasing access to services and economic opportunities. On the other hand, the project will develop infrastructure to boost the use of sustainable modes of transportation and will preserve ecological areas that are critical to water resources, generating input for environmental awareness.

These works will contribute to the fulfillment of two of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): Sustainable cities and communities (SDG-11), through actions to increase sustainable settlements with universal access to safe, inclusive, accessible, and green public areas, and sustainable urban mobility plans to contribute mitigate the effects of climate change; and Climate Action (SDG-13), by strengthening resilience and the ability to adjust to climate and natural disasters related risks.
