Sinfonia de La Plata: The Musical Scores of Integration
The Executive President, Juan Notaro, has received from the Art Director of the American Renaissance and Baroque Music Festival, Priest Piotr Nawrot, the restored scores of Sinfonia de La Plata. FONPLATA funded the restoration of Pedro Ximénez de Abrill y Tirado’s Symphony No. 11, carried out by APAC.
Thanks to FONPLATA’s contribution, a masterpiece that had been forgotten among other historical musical scores was recovered. It was found in poor condition due to lack of conservation. After going through a careful restoration process, the masterpiece was recovered and performed for the first time in the 21st century within the framework of the International Festival of American Renaissance and Baroque Music Misiones de Chiquitos.
Pedro Ximénez de Abrill y Tirado (1780 – 1856), a well-known composer, was invited to be the conductor of the chapel of the cathedral of La Plata (later Chuquisaca, today Sucre). As the story goes, the composer intentionally moved away from the traditional European esthetic and rhythmic standards, embracing a Quechua lyrical genre, known as yaraví in its Spanish form, and other innovations. The name La Sinfonía de la Plata is a tribute to the Peruvian composer who, upon arrival in Bolivia, settled in Sucre, the capital city, then known as La Plata.
FONPLATA believes that music and culture are means of communication and unifying factors between people. Therefore, we think that by supporting these initiatives we are meeting our institution’s mandate of promoting integration in an excellent way.
