FONPLATA will improve Uruguay’s sanitation infrastructure

Ph. FONPLATA

On January 19, FONPLATA – Development Bank approved a loan to help improve the quality of life and protect public health and sanitation in 61 localities of 18 departments of Uruguay.

The Bank will grant USD 325 million for the Sanitation Universalization Program, which will expand the coverage of sanitary sewerage services from 48% to 70% in the countryside, with significant impact on the reduction of the pollution load in water courses. To this end, systems for the treatment and proper disposal of household effluents will be implemented, thus protecting the environment and respecting environmental laws.

The investment includes the installation of 812 km of sanitary sewer networks, the construction and adaptation of 48 wastewater treatment plants in different cities, and the home connection of more than 57,000 homes.

The program will directly benefit 150,000 inhabitants in the Uruguayan countryside by increasing the coverage of domestic wastewater collection and treatment services. Additionally, it will directly and indirectly reach more than 500,000 inhabitants by improving local environmental conditions on public roads and waterways.

FONPLATA grants preferential financial conditions, with a compensated operating rate, considering Uruguay's investment grade. This loan is structured in four stages, with an amortization term of 19 years, including a 4-year grace period and a disbursement term of 5 years.

The project will contribute to the achievement of three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities.
