On Monday, August 28, FONPLATA approved the funding for the “Mobility and Socio-environmental Development Program of Campina Grande”, which aims at improving the quality of life of its residents and promote the economic and territorial growth of the municipality through investments in urban development and mobility.

The Finance Secretariat of the Municipality will oversee the project, which will comprise a total investment of USD 65 million to be co-financed by the Bank, with USD 52 million, and local resources, with USD 13 million.

The city of Campina Grande covers about 600 sq km (231.66 sq mi) and is in the northeastern region of the Brazilian state of Paraiba. It plays a key role integrating the state’s hinterland municipalities through its network of services (commerce, logistics, education, and health care, among others).

The works will benefit 413,000 people, the entire population of the city, by improving mobility conditions, promoting employment generation and economic development, minimizing flood risks in vulnerable neighborhoods with drainage and sanitation systems, and preserving the city's historical, cultural, and environmental heritage areas.

The program is aligned with the commitments established in FONPLATA's Sustainable Debt Framework in relation to gender and youth. It is the first project to benefit from a preferential interest rate under the “gender equity and youth compensation line”, whose purpose is to promote the demand for projects associated with reducing gender inequalities and generating employment for young people.

The program is also aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 5 – Gender equality; SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation; SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth; SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities; SDG 13 – Climate action; and SDG 15 – Life on land.
