On Saturday, March 1st, Yamandú Orsi took office as President of Uruguay. FONPLATA’s Executive President, Luciana Botafogo, participated as a government guest in the different celebrations held in Montevideo.

Botafogo greeted the incoming president and  strengthened ties with the authorities that have worked with the institution for several years. FONPLATA's portfolio in the country focuses mainly on road infrastructure, port logistics, water and sanitation, and support for SME development.

More than 80% of the approvals in Uruguay's current and past portfolio have been in the areas of transport and logistics. The Bank has also supported projects to increase the coverage of the sewage network, financing the construction and rehabilitation of five wastewater treatment plants. To the department of Maldonado, specifically, FONPLATA has granted a loan to improve the drinking water and sanitation system.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 30,000 SMEs received financial assistance from the Development Bank to alleviate the consequences of the health crisis. In addition, when the nation declared a Water Emergency, the institution financed works to mitigate the impacts of the drought.

FONPLATA also supported the works on the access roads to the Montevideo port waterfront and on the national road network, connecting the agro-industrial and forestry cargo transport to the railway network. Moreover, it contributed to the strengthening of the Bank Retirement and Pension Fund.

The Development Bank will continue working closely with Uruguay to support its development and integration in the region.
