FONPLATA’s First Institutional Carbon Footprint Inventory
FONPLATA has completed its first institutional greenhouse gas inventory, establishing a baseline to measure, manage, and reduce emissions from its administrative operations across member countries.
Covering the period November 2024–October 2025, the study was led by the socio-environmental team with support from administrative departments and staff at the Bank’s offices in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, La Paz, Buenos Aires, Brasília, Asunción, and Montevideo.
Prepared in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and ISO 14064-1:2018, the inventory estimated direct emissions, indirect emissions from electricity consumption, and other indirect emissions linked to travel, staff commuting, procurement, waste, and water use.
The total estimated footprint is 1,281.6 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent. The analysis shows that the largest source of emissions is business travel, particularly air travel, followed by emissions associated with purchased goods and services. Emissions directly under the Bank’s operational control account for only 1.1% of the total, a pattern commonly seen in financial and service institutions.
This emissions profile reflects FONPLATA’s role as a regional development bank, where local presence and project support are essential. At the same time, the inventory enables the Bank to ask more targeted questions and make informed decisions on travel planning, energy efficiency, sustainable procurement, and staff awareness.
This initial inventory will help identify priorities for action, enable comparisons over time, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making. It also aligns FONPLATA with established practices among multilateral development banks that report corporate carbon footprints.
Building on this work, the Bank will be able to institutionalize periodic emissions measurement, set incremental reduction targets, and expand actions to improve its performance as part of an evolving institutional sustainability agenda.
