FONPLATA grants USD 50 million for sanitation works in the State of Pará, Brazil

COSANPA - 2023

On Thursday, February 13, FONPLATA’s Executive Board approved a loan for sanitation and water management works in the State of Pará, Brazil. The program, led by COSANPA (Sanitation Company of Pará), aims at safeguarding urban micro-watersheds and spring recharge zones that supply the metropolitan region of Belem. To this end, the works will focus on the improvement of water management, monitoring, quality, and quantity to promote environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

The project, financed by FONPLATA and the State of Pará, includes the installation of household connections, trunk sewers, discharge lines, pumping stations, and the expansion of the Martir Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Specific objectives include increasing sewerage system coverage, expanding the network of connected households, strengthening water quality monitoring systems, improving treatment efficiency, and strengthening COSANPA's capacity in gender and diversity issues.

Several environmental actions will be taken, such as studies to mitigate solid waste sedimentation, interventions in the Agua Preta and Bolonha lakes (Belem's main sources of water supply), and monitoring and educational programs. Institutional strengthening will include the rehabilitation of the water analysis laboratory, acquisition of new equipment, economic empowerment actions, and technical training for women and youth.

It is estimated that approximately one million people will benefit directly from this program, improving their quality of life and access to sustainable services.
