FONPLATA Approved Financing to Promote Sustainable Territorial Development in Sergipe

The FONPLATA Board of Directors approved USD 78.4 million in financing for the implementation of the Sergipe Territorial Development Program — Mais Sergipe. Designed by the state government to foster balanced territorial development, the Program focuses on strategic infrastructure, climate resilience, and institutional strengthening. The total investment stands at USD 98 million, supported by a local counterpart contribution of USD 19.6 million.

Located in northeastern Brazil, Sergipe is the country’s smallest state by land area with a population of about 2.3 million. Although it boasts one of the highest GDPs per capita in the Northeast region, significant territorial disparities remain. Municipalities in the interior—particularly within the semi‑arid region—lag behind the Aracaju Metropolitan Area in access to infrastructure, connectivity, and public services.

The program seeks to reduce these gaps through targeted investments in water security, road infrastructure, land-use planning, and urban development, benefiting more than 1.6 million people. Key planned actions include the restoration of five strategic dams to bolster water security; the modernization of more than 56 kilometers of roads; the implementation of a new spatial data infrastructure to improve land-use planning; and paving and drainage works in Nossa Senhora do Socorro, one of the state's larger municipalities.

These investments will enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure for water supply and agricultural production, improve connectivity and access to services across different regions of the state, and modernize planning and public management capabilities through updated geospatial tools.

In urban areas, planned interventions in the Guajará and Santa Inês neighborhoods will improve mobility, reduce the flood risk, and foster social integration for thousands of residents. The program also features new sports and recreation community spaces designed to enhance local quality of life.

With this approval, FONPLATA reaffirms its commitment to Brazil’s sustainable development by supporting investments that improve quality of life, modernize strategic infrastructure, and create growth opportunities for local communities.
