FONPLATA: Successful Closure of Financing Agreements with the IDB and KfW
In December, FONPLATA made final disbursements of USD 10.8 million and EUR 5.5 million, closing financing lines with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and KfW, the German Development Bank, respectively, aimed at promoting sustainable development and regional integration in the countries of the La Plata Basin.
The IDB financing, totaling USD 100 million, refers to the Conditional Credit Line for Investment Projects (CCLIP) approved in 2021. The CCLIP is designed to support regional integration and border development by financing sectoral and multisectoral programs. It also leverages FONPLATA's comparative advantages in designing and implementing smaller-scale projects—preferably executed by subnational entities—with a focus on results and institutional capacity building.
These resources were used to improve transport and logistics infrastructure, promote urban development in border areas, and strengthen institutional capacities, incorporating gender, diversity, and climate change approaches across all interventions. In addition, as part of the implementation of this credit line, the IDB also offered technical cooperation aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of FONPLATA and the Executing Agencies in areas such as project approval and execution, as well as climate change, gender, and diversity. This support enabled the consolidation of key initiatives, including the continued implementation of the gender strategy at both the institutional and operational levels.
FONPLATA also completed its first loan with KfW under the Regional Pro-Climate Program, which finances projects that contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation in the La Plata Basin. The loan, totaling EUR 37 million, supported development initiatives related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable public transportation, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
These operations reinforce FONPLATA's role as a strategic partner for financing sustainable development and regional integration in the La Plata Basin.
