Environmental and social improvement for the main watershed of Belém do Pará - Brazil
FONPLATA – Development Bank will fund the “Macro-drainage Program of the Mata Fome Hydrographic Basin in Belém do Pará – PROMMAF” that aims at improving the environmental and social conditions on the main waterway of the basin for the benefit of the population.
The Municipality of Belém, capital city of the state of Pará, will oversee the project’s execution, which counts with sovereign guarantee of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The total investment in the program is USD 75 million, of which FONPLATA will finance USD 60 million, and USD 15 million will be funded by local contribution.
The program aims at reducing the incidence of flooding in the most vulnerable areas; improving environmental and urban conditions for the population through the rehabilitation and/or construction of the Mata Fome watercourse drainage system; and providing public recreational facilities for the population living in its area of influence.
The program complies with the commitment subscribed through FONPLATA's Sustainable Debt Framework at the Socio-Environmental level, by implementing actions aimed at minimizing the impact of floods affecting the vulnerable population and restoring the ecosystem related to water resources.
Thus, it will contribute to reach four of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): “No Poverty” (SDG-1), “Gender Equality” (SDG-5), “Clean Water and Sanitation” (SDG-6), and “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG-11).
